Tombigbee National Forest

Tombigbee National Forest is a United States National Forest located in eastern and northeastern Mississippi, taking its name from the Tombigbee River that flows through the region. Although it functions as a single federal forest under the U.S. Forest Service, its acreage is split into two non-contiguous sections. The larger southern portion accounts for the bulk of the forest's land, while a smaller northern unit extends farther up into the northeastern part of the state. The forest's landscape reflects the mixed topography of east-central Mississippi, where pine woodlands, mixed hardwood stands, and small lakes characterize the rural countryside. Choctaw Lake, a recognisable feature within the southern section, is among the most visited spots in the forest and supports typical outdoor recreation activities associated with southern U.S. national forests. One of the forest's most distinctive cultural features is the Owl Creek Mounds, a group of five platform mounds built between roughly 1100 and 1200 CE by Indigenous mound-building peoples. Together with its natural setting, the forest represents a combination of preserved southern forest landscape and an important Mississippi archaeological site.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
