Ukkusiksalik National Park

Ukkusiksalik National Park is a vast Arctic protected area in Nunavut, Canada, encompassing over 20,000 square kilometres of tundra, coastal mudflats, and the dramatic Wager Bay fjord system. Located just south of the Arctic Circle near the hamlet of Naujaat (formerly Repulse Bay), the park represents one of Canada's most remote and ecologically significant northern wilderness areas. The park's name derives from the Inuktitut word ukkusiksalik, meaning where there is material for the stone pot, referencing the steatite (soapstone) deposits found throughout the region. The landscape centres on Wager Bay, a 100-kilometre-long inlet extending from Roes Welcome Sound on Hudson Bay, featuring dramatic tidal phenomena, deep fjord waters, and the remarkable reversing falls where tides create spectacular current reversals. Though the park is uninhabited today, it preserves extraordinary evidence of continuous Inuit habitation spanning from the 11th century through the 1960s, with over 500 documented archaeological sites revealing the rich cultural history of the Barrenland Inuit, Caribou Inuit, and earlier Thule and Dorset cultures.
