Ulva Island

Ulva Island is a small, low-lying island of about 2.7 square kilometres lying within Paterson Inlet on the eastern side of Stewart Island, known in Māori as Rakiura, in southernmost New Zealand. Almost the entire island falls within Rakiura National Park, and its combination of relative isolation from mammalian predators and very easy boat access from Stewart Island has made it one of the most important open sanctuaries for native forest birds and plants in the country. The island is renowned for its dense temperate rainforest and quiet walking tracks, where visitors can observe species such as South Island saddleback, yellowhead, Stewart Island robin, southern brown kiwi, rifleman, parakeets, and kākā at close range. Its standing as a bird sanctuary rests on a sustained predator-control history: after rats were eradicated in 1997, extirpated species were reintroduced, and the Department of Conservation continues to maintain the island's pest-free status. Beyond its ecological role, Ulva Island is part of a broader Rakiura cultural and natural landscape that includes coastal fiords, estuarine inlets, and endemic flora. Although small, it carries disproportionate importance for conservation in southern New Zealand because it functions as both a refuge for threatened species and a recovery site where locally extinct birds have been re-established.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
