Ursula Island Game Refuge and Bird Sanctuary

Ursula Island Game Refuge and Bird Sanctuary is a small protected island lying in the Sulu Sea off the southwestern tip of Palawan in the Philippines. Located roughly 250 kilometers southwest of Puerto Princesa and about 20 kilometers offshore from the municipality of Brooke's Point, the reserve was established on 30 April 1970 through Presidential Decree No. 14 as a combined game refuge and bird sanctuary. Despite covering only about 17 hectares, the island is ecologically important because it supports lowland rainforest, coastal mangrove forest, and populations of several rare or declining bird species native to the Philippine archipelago. The island is administered by the municipality of Bataraza and forms part of the network of protected areas in the MIMAROPA region of the western Philippines. Ursula Island has long been recognized as an important nesting site for island-dwelling birds, but its bird populations have declined sharply over recent decades, from an estimated 150,000 individuals to a few thousand. The reserve has been closed to visitors and local residents since 2003 in order to limit disturbance to nesting birds, illegal fishing around the island, and the arrival of invasive species.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
