Wietzendorfer Moor

Wietzendorfer Moor is a nature reserve (Naturschutzgebiet) in Lower Saxony, Germany, located in the municipality of Wietzendorf within the Heidekreis district. It lies southeast of the town of Soltau and represents a surviving fragment of the formerly extensive raised bog landscape that once stretched between Wietzendorf and Bergen. Established as a protected area in 1998, the reserve combines regenerated bog woodland, rewetted peat cuttings, species-rich wet meadows, and a chain of polder ponds that were originally linked to a nearby potato starch factory. The reserve is defined less by dramatic scenery than by the quiet ecological character of a working, partially restored northern German bog landscape. Decades of drainage and peat cutting have left their mark, but active rewetting efforts, the removal of encroaching trees, and extensive agricultural use of the wet meadows have allowed typical raised bog vegetation and meadow bird populations to recover. Today it is valued both as a refuge for wetland flora and as a regionally important breeding, resting, and wintering site for waterbirds and meadow birds. Wietzendorfer Moor is anchored in the broader cultural and ecological context of the Lüneburg Heath region, and a section of the regional Jacobusweg pilgrimage trail passes through it. A circular wet meadow and bog discovery trail, together with a broad sand cycle path, makes the reserve accessible to visitors interested in bog ecology, wetland birdlife, and the broader landscape history of northern Germany.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
