Wongalara Sanctuary

Wongalara Sanctuary is a large nature reserve in the Top End of Australia's Northern Territory, situated on the southern edge of Arnhem Land. It forms part of one of the most ecologically significant parts of northern Australia, where sandstone escarpments, savannah woodlands, and monsoon rainforests meet a network of seasonal rivers. The sanctuary is privately owned and managed by the Australian Wildlife Conservancy and has become an important refuge for threatened species in the region. The reserve protects a mosaic of typical Top End habitats, including spinifex-covered ranges, sandstone plateaus and escarpments, eucalypt forests and woodlands, monsoon rainforest patches, and wetlands. Three river systems flow through the sanctuary, including the Wilton River, giving it exceptional ecological variety within a single protected landscape. Feral herbivores have been actively excluded from large portions of the property, allowing native vegetation and wildlife to recover in a way that is unusual for the region. Wongalara sits roughly 120 kilometres southeast of Kakadu National Park, placing it within a wider network of Arnhem Land and surrounding conservation areas. Its combination of scale, habitat diversity, and active management against invasive species has made it a focus for ecological research and a stronghold for a number of declining Australian species.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
