Port Hebert Migratory Bird Sanctuary

The Port Hebert Migratory Bird Sanctuary is a protected wildlife area on the Atlantic coast of Nova Scotia, Canada. It lies along the southwestern shore of the Nova Scotia peninsula, occupying the inner portion of the broad, shallow Port L'Hebert inlet. The sanctuary is maintained primarily for the conservation of migratory and wintering waterfowl, and it forms part of a cluster of protected wetlands along the province's South Shore. The area is defined by extensive tidal flats and very shallow coastal waters that are exposed at low tide. Because tides in the bay range widely between low and high water, large sand and mudflats regularly appear and disappear through the tidal cycle, creating productive feeding habitat for ducks, geese, and shorebirds. Together with two adjacent migratory bird sanctuaries at Port Joli and Sable River, the Port Hebert site plays an important role in the regional waterfowl protection network of eastern Canada. The sanctuary has been protected since the early 1940s and remains under federal oversight. Although it is not a recreational park in the usual sense, its ecological importance as a refuge for thousands of waterfowl each year gives it strong national conservation significance.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
