Boondina Conservation Park

Boondina Conservation Park is a protected area in the far west of South Australia, situated within the gazetted locality of Yellabinna and lying a short distance north-east of the small coastal town of Fowlers Bay. Established in its current form in 2006 from land that had earlier been part of the Yumbarra Conservation Reserve, the park covers an area of roughly 125 square kilometres of semi-arid country. The park lies within one of the largest connected tracts of mallee woodland in southern Australia and is managed as part of the much larger Yellabinna Reserves, a grouping that brings together several conservation parks, a regional reserve, and a wilderness protection area. Its name is taken from a local Aboriginal word associated with water sources in the area, reflecting the importance of water in this otherwise dry landscape. Boondina has no public visitor facilities and no public vehicular access. It is classified as an IUCN Category VI protected area, meaning that sustainable use of natural resources is permitted, including mineral exploration and mining. The park is also notable for its co-management arrangements with the Far West Coast Aboriginal Corporation, which provides advice on the management of reserves in this part of South Australia, and for being a place where Aboriginal people may continue to hunt and gather food.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.
