Bosques Nublados de Udima Wildlife Refuge

Bosques Nublados de Udima Wildlife Refuge is a protected area of roughly 12,183 hectares in northern Peru, spanning the Cajamarca and Lambayeque regions along the western slopes of the Andes. It was established in 2011 by Peru's national service of protected natural areas, SERNANP, and is classified as an IUCN Category IV habitat and species management area. The refuge safeguards a striking band of Andean cloud forest, an unusual ecosystem found at elevations between roughly 2,000 and 3,000 metres, sandwiched between the dry Pacific coastal deserts to the west and the vast Amazon rainforests to the east. Because the Andes are relatively low in this part of Peru, Amazonian plant and animal species appear here on the western slopes in ecosystems that are otherwise atypical for this side of the continent. Beyond its ecological value, the refuge protects the headwaters of the Zaña River, which supplies irrigation water to one of the region's most productive agricultural valleys, and it preserves pre-Columbian archaeological ruins, including the Poro Poro site and canals considered among the oldest known irrigation works in the Americas.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
