Historic peninsula park protecting volcanic peaks, coral reefs, and a restored 18th-century garrison

Cabrits National Park

Cabrits National Park occupies a distinctive peninsula at the northern end of the Caribbean island of Dominica, just north of the town of Portsmouth. The park was established in 1986 and covers approximately 1,313 acres of land alongside a marine protected area of 421 hectares spanning between Prince Rupert Bay and Toucar Bay. The landscape is defined by two volcanic peaks, East Cabrit and West Cabrit, which rise to 140 meters and 171 meters respectively and were formed around one million years ago by the former Morne au Diable volcano. Originally a separate island, the peninsula was connected to mainland Dominica through sediment deposits from Douglas Bay and Prince Rupert Bay. The park uniquely combines natural preservation with cultural heritage protection, guarding both the surrounding tropical forest, coral reefs, and wetlands as well as the historic Fort Shirley garrison, a significant site in Caribbean colonial and military history.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
