Cova-Paul-Ribeira da Torre Natural Park

Cova-Paul-Ribeira da Torre Natural Park is a protected natural area located in the eastern highlands of Santo Antão, the largest island in the Cape Verde archipelago. The park encompasses a dramatic landscape centered around the ancient Cova Crater, together with the steep upper valleys of the Ribeira da Torre and Ribeira do Paul river systems, and the towering Pico da Cruz peak. This volcanic terrain rises from approximately 400 meters near the village of Xoxo to 1,585 meters at the summit, creating a landscape of profound topographic relief characterized by dramatic cliffs, escarpments, and deep river valleys that cascade toward the Atlantic coast. The natural park represents one of ten protected natural areas established across Cape Verde and has been included on the country's tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage Site designation since 2016. Its significance stems from the remarkable concentration of endemic plant species, many of which face critical conservation threats, as well as the park's role in protecting the watershed that supports local agricultural communities in the Paul Valley and surrounding municipalities. The park spans three municipalities: Ribeira Grande, Paul, and Porto Novo, covering a total area of 20.92 square kilometers.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
