Isla de Flores

Isla de Flores is a small island situated in the Río de la Plata, just off the southern coast of Uruguay in the department of Canelones. Although it covers only a few dozen hectares and rises barely two meters above sea level, it plays an outsized role in the country's maritime, political, and immigration history. The island lies roughly midway between the Montevideo coastal promenade and the dangerous Banco Inglés shoal, about 21 kilometers southeast of Punta Carretas, and during high tide it briefly fragments into three smaller islets. On 26 February 2018, the island and a surrounding maritime buffer of two nautical miles were formally incorporated into Uruguay's National System of Protected Areas under the designation Parque Nacional Isla de Flores. Its earlier inclusion on Uruguay's Tentative List for UNESCO World Heritage status, granted in 2015, reflects the island's combined natural, cultural, and fluvial-maritime value. Today the park stands as both a protected natural site and an open-air record of Uruguay's colonial past, including the lazaretto that processed waves of immigrants and the lighthouse that became a 19th-century bargaining chip in regional politics.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
