Joseph Battell Wilderness

The Joseph Battell Wilderness is a federally designated wilderness area within the Green Mountain National Forest in Addison County, Vermont. It is one of eight wildernesses that make up the national forest, and was formally established under the New England Wilderness Act of 2006. Covering roughly 12,336 acres of forested ridgelines and steep valleys, the area is named for Joseph Battell, a Middlebury philanthropist and early conservation advocate whose 1915 bequest became the nucleus of what is now the high-elevation core of the wilderness. The terrain is defined by a string of mountains exceeding three thousand feet, ranging from Mount Horrid and the Great Cliffs in the south to Gillespie Peak, the highest summit in the group. Between these peaks lie deep ravines, headwater streams, and connected ridgelines that support extensive northern hardwood and boreal habitats. The wilderness is also closely associated with the Long Trail, which threads through the area from Brandon Gap in the south to Middlebury Gap in the north, making the Battell Wilderness a key segment of Vermont's most historic backpacking corridor. Beyond its landscape character, the wilderness reflects a longer conservation story. Battell left lands to Middlebury College, which later sold them to the U.S. Forest Service, ultimately enabling the creation of the northern unit of the Green Mountain National Forest. Today the Joseph Battell Wilderness is recognized for its protected ridge ecology, its scenic cliffs, and its role as both a wildlife refuge and a quiet hiking destination in central Vermont.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
