Kalamurina Sanctuary

Kalamurina Sanctuary is a large private nature reserve in the arid north-eastern corner of South Australia, situated along the northern shore of Lake Eyre North. The property covers roughly 6,700 square kilometres of dunefields, gibber plains, desert woodlands, and seasonally active floodplains, making it one of the single largest conservation holdings in central Australia. Together with surrounding reserves such as the Simpson Desert Regional Reserve and Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre National Park, Kalamurina forms part of a continuous block of protected country larger than the state of Tasmania. The land was operated as a pastoral property for well over a century before being acquired in 2007 by the Australian Wildlife Conservancy. It is now managed exclusively for biodiversity conservation and the recovery of threatened desert species, including several mammals, reptiles, and birds that survive only in this fragile inland landscape. The reserve occupies a critical meeting point of three desert waterways, the Warburton River, the Macumba River, and Kallakoopah Creek, which drain into Lake Eyre. Its combination of freshwater and saline lakes, riparian corridors, and arid uplands gives Kalamurina an unusually diverse ecological profile for the Australian outback.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
