Kanku-Breakaways Conservation Park

Kanku-Breakaways Conservation Park is a protected area in northern South Australia, situated just off the Stuart Highway roughly 33 kilometres north of Coober Pedy. The park protects a visually striking arid landscape of mesas and low hills that appear to have "broken away" from the higher ground of the surrounding escarpment, giving the original protected area its evocative name. Beyond its geological character, the park holds strong significance for the Antakirinja Matu-Yankunytjatjara people, the traditional Aboriginal owners of the land, who refer to the area as "Umoona," a word meaning "long life." The conservation park was renamed to its present title in 2015 to reflect both this cultural heritage and its protected status, and it is now co-managed by the South Australian government, an Aboriginal corporation, and the local council. The landscape sits within the broader environment around Coober Pedy, a region known worldwide for opal mining, and forms a compact but distinctive outback destination. Its combination of desert scenery, cultural importance, and easy access from a major highway make it one of the most recognizable natural landmarks in the South Australian outback.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
