Laguna de Rocha

Laguna de Rocha is an extensive, shallow coastal lagoon in southeastern Uruguay, separated from the Atlantic Ocean by a sandy barrier that periodically opens and closes to the sea. Located in the department of Rocha, the lagoon covers a broad area of around 72 square kilometers and is fed by several streams, including the Rocha and Las Conchas creeks. Its natural connection to the ocean produces shifting salinity levels, which support a remarkably diverse biological environment. The lagoon is recognized internationally for its ecological importance. It holds UNESCO Man and the Biosphere (MaB) Biosphere Reserve status, designation as an Important Bird Area (IBA), Ramsar Wetland of International Importance status, and membership in the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network. These protections reflect the lagoon's importance for migratory waterbirds, native fauna, and the fragile coastal ecosystems of the Uruguayan Atlantic coast. Beyond its ecological value, Laguna de Rocha is a defining landscape feature of the Rocha region and of Uruguay's southeastern coastline, where barrier beaches, wetlands, agricultural plains, and small coastal woodlands meet.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
