Lake Gabou is a lake and associated wetlands located in the Tagant Region of central Mauritania. It sits on the Tagant Plateau, an elevated sandstone landscape in the Sahara-Sahel transition zone, and captures seasonal runoff that collects in shallow basins across the plateau. The site is recognized for its ecological value in an otherwise arid environment. It supports indigenous flora such as date palms, doum palms, African baobabs, and desert roses, and provides a refuge for West African crocodiles as well as migrating and wintering birds. Lake Gabou is also surrounded by the settlement of Ksar el Barka, reflecting a long-standing relationship between the wetland and local communities. Designated a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance in 2009, Lake Gabou is considered an important node in the hydrographic network of the Tagant Plateau and a key site for waterbird conservation in West Africa. Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
