Lake Neusiedl

Lake Neusiedl is the largest endorheic (closed-basin) lake in Central Europe, straddling the border between Austria and Hungary in the transition zone between the eastern Alps and the Pannonian Plain. It is a true steppe lake, very shallow and mildly saline, with a vast surrounding reed belt that forms the second-largest contiguous Phragmites marshland in Europe after the Danube Delta. The lake and its environs are internationally significant for biodiversity, supporting over 300 recorded bird species, including one of the largest breeding colonies of great egrets in Europe, and serving as a critical staging area for migratory birds along a major flyway. A pair of cross-border national parks protects the area: the Austrian Neusiedler See-Seewinkel National Park and the larger Hungarian Fertő-Hanság National Park. Together they were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2001 as the Fertő/Neusiedlersee Cultural Landscape. Lake Neusiedl is also a landscape defined by human presence stretching back to the Neolithic. Neolithic, Hallstatt-era, Roman, medieval, and Esterházy-era settlements cluster around its shores, and the lake today remains a vital recreational and cultural landscape, frequently called the "Sea of the Viennese" for its proximity to Vienna.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
