Meßhagen bei Niedermeiser

Meßhagen bei Niedermeiser is a small nature reserve (Naturschutzgebiet) in the northern part of the German state of Hesse, located southwest of the town of Hofgeismar within the municipality of Liebenau and the district of Kassel. Designated in March 1996, the protected area covers around 55 hectares and forms part of the larger FFH (Fauna-Flora-Habitat) site "Kelzer Holz und Meßhagen", which gives it recognition under European Union nature conservation law. The reserve protects a mosaic of open grassland and forest set within the broader Kelzer Holz woodland, which lies in the southwestern corner of the Naturpark Reinhardswald. The grassland was created after a former military training area was abandoned in the early 1990s, and today it is managed as extensively used meadows and pastures with scattered shrubs and trees. Together with surrounding beech forest and structurally rich woodland edges, Meßhagen provides habitat for a wide range of meadow wildflowers, butterflies, grasshoppers, and ground-nesting birds. Although modest in size, Meßhagen has clear ecological value as a refuge for species that depend on open, flower-rich habitats and old, structurally diverse deciduous forest. It is a quiet, locally important conservation area rather than a major visitor destination.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
