Motuora

Motuora is a small, forested nature reserve island in the western Hauraki Gulf, lying off the north-eastern coast of New Zealand's North Island. Roughly 80 hectares in area and only about two kilometres long, it rises to a modest 67 metres and sits between Kawau Island to the north-east, Mahurangi Heads to the west, and Auckland some 35 kilometres to the south. Its isolation in the gulf has sheltered it from the exotic mammals that have transformed so many New Zealand islands, making it a key refuge for endemic flora and fauna. The island has no permanent residents today, but historically it was farmed and its original coastal forest was largely cleared during the twentieth century. Since 1965, when the Crown acquired it as a recreation reserve, Motuora has undergone a long campaign of ecological restoration led by volunteers and the Motuora Restoration Society, working alongside the Department of Conservation. Native forest has been replanted, and several native reptile and seabird species have been deliberately introduced or reintroduced to rebuild the island's ecological communities. Motuora is particularly notable as one of the 'kiwi creche' islands used in Operation Nest Egg, the Department of Conservation programme that raises North Island brown kiwi chicks in a predator-free environment before they are moved back to the mainland. It also supports a small breeding colony of Australasian gannets and has been a focus for establishing new petrel colonies through translocation.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
