Mount Barney National Park

Mount Barney National Park is a protected area in southeast Queensland, Australia, situated approximately 90 kilometers southwest of Brisbane near the town of Rathdowney. The park encompasses roughly 130 square kilometers of rugged mountainous terrain dominated by the twin peaks of Mount Barney, which rises to 1,359 meters and represents the second-highest peak in southeast Queensland. These dramatic volcanic mountains are the remains of the ancient Focal Peak Shield Volcano, which erupted approximately 24 million years ago. The park forms part of the Scenic Rim, a mountain range marking the border between Queensland and New South Wales, and was inscribed as a component of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Site in 1994. The landscape features steep valleys, rock pools, caves, and a remarkable transition from open woodlands in the foothills to subtropical and cool temperate rainforests at higher elevations, making it one of the most botanically diverse protected areas in eastern Australia.
