Established in May 1977, the park covers approximately 440 square kilometers of mountainous terrain characterized by exceptional ecological diversity. The park takes its name from Munchique Mountain, a prominent peak in the southeastern sector of the protected area. Thirty streams and rivers traverse the landscape, many feeding into the San Juan de Micay River, one of the largest waterways in Colombia's Pacific drainage basin. The park's elevation gradient from roughly 200 meters to over 3,500 meters above sea level creates multiple distinct thermal zones, supporting an extraordinary range of habitats and species. With one of Colombia's highest biodiversity indices, the park harbors approximately 500 bird species, 182 mammal species, and numerous amphibians and butterflies, making it a critical conservation area in the northern Andes.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
