Niumi National Park

Niumi National Park is a protected coastal wetland area in the northern region of The Gambia, occupying the southern tip of the transboundary Sine-Saloum Delta which spans the border between The Gambia and Senegal. Established in 1987, the park covers approximately 4,940 hectares and encompasses a diverse mosaic of wetland habitats including freshwater marshes, brackish lagoons, sand spits, and extensive mangrove forests dominated by Rhizophora species. The park lies within the Western Africa Marine ecoregion and represents one of the most significant coastal wetland complexes in West Africa. In 2008, the park was designated as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance, recognizing its outstanding universal value as a habitat for migratory waterbirds and its ecological significance within the broader delta system.
