Padre Island National Seashore

Padre Island National Seashore is a long, narrow protected seascore on the northern end of Padre Island, a barrier island off the South Texas coast in the western Gulf of Mexico. The seashore preserves roughly 70 miles of largely undeveloped beach and dune landscape, along with the shallow hypersaline Laguna Madre on its landward side, creating a rare blend of open Gulf shoreline, wind-shaped dunes, tidal flats, and interior grasslands. The park is best understood as a place where big-scale natural processes still dominate. Drive-on beaches, primitive camping, a globally important bird area, and an active Kemp's ridley sea turtle nesting program together define the park's identity. It is one of the few places in the United States where visitors can drive directly onto a long stretch of natural Gulf beach and experience a barrier island in a relatively undeveloped state.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
