About Réserve naturelle régionale des Mardelles de Prémery

Réserve naturelle régionale des Mardelles de Prémery

The Réserve naturelle régionale des Mardelles de Prémery is a small French regional nature reserve protecting an unusual cluster of forest pools and peat-forming habitats in central France. Established in 2015 within the historic state forest of Prémery in the Nièvre department, the reserve covers around 252 hectares of woodland that shelters a network of so-called mardelles, shallow peat-filled depressions scattered through the forest. What makes the site genuinely distinctive is the combination of ecological and scientific value. The mardelles and associated peatlands sit on calcareous substrate and occur at various stages of ecological development, supporting a rich flora and fauna that includes multiple nationally protected species. The same pools and surrounding wetlands preserve pollen archives stretching back more than 15,000 years, giving the reserve an unusual palynological significance alongside its biodiversity role. The reserve also functions as the source area for numerous small headwater streams, giving it an important hydrological function for the surrounding landscape. Five educational trails cross the site, making the protected area both a conservation laboratory and a place where visitors can directly engage with one of the most unusual wetland habitats of the French lowlands.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
