Rothenberg bei Burguffeln

Rothenberg bei Burguffeln is a compact nature and Habitats Directive reserve in northern Hesse, Germany, situated west of the town of Immenhausen in the district of Kassel. Covering roughly 28 hectares, the reserve consists of three separate sections built around a chain of small ponds and adjacent wetlands in the lowland of the Esse stream and a tributary flowing into it, with parts of the slopes of the Rothenberg hill included on the edges. The defining character of the area comes from its water bodies and their margins. Two of the larger ponds, the Rothenküler Teich and the Tonkaule, are of medieval origin and were once managed as fish ponds, while smaller water bodies in the Lindenmühle section and at Tonkaule were created as part of conservation management. Around the ponds, reedbeds, tall herb communities, sedge marshes, wet meadows, and patches of alluvial woodland create a richly structured wetland mosaic surrounded by agricultural land. Although small, the reserve is ecologically dense and carries both national nature protection status and European Union Natura 2000 recognition as a Flora-Fauna-Habitat site. It supports a varied community of breeding waterbirds, amphibians, dragonflies, and butterflies, making it a representative example of the culturally shaped pond landscapes that still survive in the Hessian lowlands.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
