Solitary Islands Marine Park

Solitary Islands Marine Park is a New South Wales state marine park that stretches approximately 75 kilometres along the northern NSW coast, from Muttonbird Island near Coffs Harbour in the south to Plover Island near the Sandon River in the north. Established in 1991 as a marine reserve and formally declared a marine park in January 1998, it covers roughly 72,000 hectares extending from the high water mark out to three nautical miles offshore, encompassing estuaries, coastal lakes, five main islands, and a fringe of submerged reefs. The park is ecologically significant because it sits at the meeting point of tropical and temperate marine biogeographic regions, where the warm East Australian Current shapes unique cross-shelf biological gradients. Mixed tropical and temperate fish, corals, invertebrates, seabirds, and marine mammals all reach their northern or southern distributional limits here, and the area contains the southernmost extensive coral communities on the eastern Australian coast. Recognition of this transition zone, combined with habitats ranging from mangrove-fringed estuaries to deep reef gutters, gives the park an unusually rich biodiversity profile for a temperate coastline and makes it a focal point for both conservation management and marine research.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
