The park spans approximately 69,000 hectares across 29 municipalities in the Province of Potenza, encompassing the Lucano Apennine range, the Val d'Agri basin, and the Lagonegrese area. This relatively young Italian national park represents one of the most significant recent additions to Italy's protected area network, protecting a rugged mountainous territory that serves as a critical ecological corridor between two major southern Italian parks: Pollino National Park to the south and Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park to the west.
