Área Protegida Municipal Bajo Paraguá

Área Protegida Municipal Bajo Paraguá is a municipal-level protected area in the lowlands of northern Bolivia, situated within the municipality of San Ignacio de Velasco in the Velasco province of Santa Cruz department. It sits inside the older and much larger Reserva Forestal Bajo Paraguá, and is bordered to the east by the Noel Kempff Mercado National Park, one of Bolivia's flagship conservation landscapes. The area lies squarely within the Chiquitano dry forest ecoregion, a transitional ecosystem that mixes elements of Amazonian and Chaco vegetation and is widely regarded as one of the most ecologically important forest formations in South America. The protected area exists to combine biodiversity conservation with the protection of the cultural heritage and lands of indigenous peoples who live within the territory. Four indigenous communities live inside the protected area, three of them belonging to the Chiquitano people and one to the Guarasugwe (formerly Guarayo) people. The protected area therefore functions not only as a forest reserve but also as a cultural and territorial safeguard for lowland indigenous livelihoods.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
