The reserve is centred around the estuary of the Bao Bolong tributary, which originates in Senegal and flows into the River Gambia. The reserve protects critical habitat for waterbirds and has been recognized as an Important Bird Area by BirdLife International, with 268 bird species recorded within its boundaries.
