Borenore Karst Conservation Reserve

Borenore Karst Conservation Reserve is a protected natural area in the Central West region of New South Wales, Australia, situated roughly 17 kilometres west of the city of Orange. The reserve centres on a cluster of limestone caves and surrounding karst landscapes that are notable for their geology and their well-preserved fossils from a long-lived Silurian-era reef complex. The protected area covers a modest footprint of around 136 hectares and is recognised for the diversity of its karst features, including caves, sink holes, and exposed reef sediments. It is bordered by igneous rock associated with volcanic activity from nearby Mount Canobolas, producing a striking geological contrast between ancient marine limestones and much younger volcanic terrain. Beyond its geological importance, the reserve is known for its resident colony of Eastern bent-winged bats, the historical quarrying of the distinctive Borenore Red marble, and its heritage value as one of the more accessible cave systems in inland New South Wales. It is managed jointly under NSW conservation frameworks and is categorised as a natural monument or feature under international protected-area guidelines.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
