Bosque del Pueblo

Bosque del Pueblo, meaning People's Forest, is one of the 20 forest units that make up the public forest system of Puerto Rico. Located in the mountainous municipality of Adjuntas in the center of the island, the 738-acre reserve sits within the Cordillera Central and spans parts of the barrios of Vegas Arriba, Vegas Abajo, and Pellejas. The forest was rescued from planned quarry development through a sustained local campaign led by the community organization Casa Pueblo between 1980 and 1995. Its protection preserves not only forest habitat but also the headwaters of important regional rivers, including the Pellejas and Viví, linking it hydrologically to broader downstream systems. Ecologically, Bosque del Pueblo is significant as a breeding site for migratory birds and as habitat for endangered endemic raptors such as the Puerto Rican broad-winged hawk and the Puerto Rican sharp-shinned hawk. It also functions as a forested ecological corridor connecting the Guilarte, Río Abajo, and Toro Negro state forests, and forms part of the Cordillera Central Important Bird Area recognized in 2007.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
