Brush Island Nature Reserve

Brush Island Nature Reserve is a small protected continental island lying in the Tasman Sea off the south coast of New South Wales, Australia, just southeast of the coastal village of Bawley Point. Although the reserve covers only about 47 hectares, it holds a remarkable concentration of breeding seabirds, including wedge-tailed shearwaters, short-tailed shearwaters, little penguins, and sooty oystercatchers, set within a landscape of steep rocky cliffs and low coastal scrub. The reserve was gazetted as a nature reserve in July 1963 and is managed as a strict nature reserve under the New South Wales National Parks and Wildlife Service. It is listed on Australia's Register of the National Estate and carries a long Indigenous association with the Yuin nation, where the island is known as "Mit Island" in the Dhurga language. Today it stands out as one of the South Coast's most important seabird refuges and a quiet symbol of successful small-island conservation.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
