Evaporitic Karst and Caves of the Northern Apennines

The Evaporitic Karst and Caves of the Northern Apennines is a UNESCO World Heritage serial site located in the Emilia-Romagna region of northern Italy. Inscribed in 2023 as Italy's 59th World Heritage entry, the property brings together nine distinct areas across the provinces of Reggio Emilia, Bologna, Ravenna, and Rimini, each protecting a different facet of one of the world's most extraordinary gypsum landscapes. The site preserves an unusually extensive and well-conserved epigenetic gypsum karst terrain, with more than 900 caves catalogued across a relatively compact geographic area. The combined explored length of these caves exceeds 100 kilometers, and several include the deepest known gypsum caves on Earth, reaching roughly 265 meters below the surface. Together, these landscapes are recognized by the scientific community for their outstanding universal value as a record of geological and geomorphological evolution. What makes this property especially significant is its role as the first and most thoroughly studied evaporite karst system on the planet, with academic research extending back to the sixteenth century. It is a benchmark for understanding how soluble evaporite rocks shape terrain over geological timescales, and it continues to serve as a reference point for karst science worldwide.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
