The protected area sits at elevations ranging from 120 meters to 1,538 meters above sea level, creating a gradient of habitats that support both dry forest and tropical forest ecosystems. The park is notable for containing the Tumbes River, the only navigable river along the Peruvian coast, which flows through the protected area and provides critical aquatic habitat. As part of the Tumbes-Piura dry forests ecoregion, the park represents one of the most important remnants of Pacific tropical forest in Peru and serves as a corridor for biodiversity conservation in this biologically significant but threatened region.
