Chayu Nain Communal Reserve

The Chayu Nain Communal Reserve is a Peruvian protected area in the Amazonas Region of the country's northern highlands and tropical lowlands. It spans more than 23,000 hectares across the provinces of Bagua and Utcubamba, within the districts of Aramango, Imaza, and Cajaruro. It is managed under IUCN Category VI, which is reserved for landscapes where the conservation of ecosystems is combined with the sustainable use of natural resources by local communities. The reserve is a stronghold of the Cordillera del Cóndor's eastern escarpment, where sandstone ridges give way to dense forests and cloud-forest gradients. Its recognition reflects the role of indigenous Awajun communities in conserving the territory, and its biodiversity includes rare primates, Andean bears, tapirs, and recently described endemic species. Chayu Nain forms part of Peru's national network of protected natural areas administered by SERNANP, the national service for natural protected areas. Its creation in 2009 was a milestone in the formal recognition of indigenous-managed conservation in one of the most ecologically distinctive borderland regions in the Andes-Amazon interface.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
