Cuatrociénegas Flora and Fauna Protection Area

The Cuatrociénegas Flora and Fauna Protection Area is a federally protected natural reserve in the central part of the state of Coahuila, Mexico, occupying the floor of a broad, nearly flat interior valley near the town of Cuatrociénegas de Carranza. At well over 80,000 hectares, the protected area encompasses a remarkable desert wetland complex formed by hundreds of spring-fed pools called pozas, permanent streams, and shallow flooded flats known locally as lagunas, all set within an arid landscape ringed by limestone mountains. The valley is internationally recognized as one of the most important wetlands in Mexico and is designated as a RAMSAR site of global priority. It sits within the Chihuahuan Desert ecoregion, yet its combination of isolation, mineral-rich soils, gypsum outcrops, and saline conditions has produced an exceptionally high concentration of endemic species. The reserve protects a unique ensemble of stromatolites, endemic fish, crustaceans, mollusks, and reptiles found nowhere else on Earth. The protected landscape includes not only aquatic habitats but also the second-largest gypsum dune field in the Americas, halophytic grasslands, xerophytic scrub, and gypsum-loving plant communities on the surrounding bajadas. The Cuatrociénegas valley functions as both a scientific reference site for understanding ancient and modern aquatic ecosystems and a striking example of how life can flourish in an extreme desert environment.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
