Dashanbao Black-necked Crane National Nature Reserve

Dashanbao Black-necked Crane National Nature Reserve is a national-level protected area in northeastern Yunnan Province, China. It occupies the entirety of the Dashanbao township in Zhaotong's Zhaoyang District, covering a high plateau landscape where subalpine wetlands, grassland valleys, and small alpine lakes create ideal wintering habitat for the black-necked crane, one of the world's rarest and most range-restricted crane species. The reserve is recognized as one of the most important wintering grounds for the black-necked crane anywhere on Earth, hosting one of the densest concentrations of the species recorded in China. First protected in 1990 at the municipal level, it was elevated to a national nature reserve in 2003, and later designated an internationally important wetland under the Ramsar Convention. Beyond its significance for cranes, the park represents a distinctive highland ecological zone shaped by cool temperatures, long winters, and seasonal snow cover. Its combination of broad pastures, shallow wetlands, and reservoir lakes supports a specific mix of high-altitude wildlife adapted to harsh seasonal variation.
