Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area

Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area is a roughly 70,000-acre protected landscape straddling northwest New Jersey and northeast Pennsylvania, centered on a 40-mile stretch of the Delaware River. The river, designated the Middle Delaware National Scenic River, flows between the Appalachian ridges, passing through the dramatic Delaware Water Gap where it cuts between Blue Mountain in Pennsylvania and Kittatinny Mountain in New Jersey. The recreation area protects a broad mix of forested ridges, river valleys, waterfalls, historic farmland, and prehistoric and colonial-era sites. It includes a section of the Appalachian Trail, state forest lands, and numerous named waterfalls, and it draws more than four million visitors a year from the nearby New York metropolitan area, making it one of the most visited units of the National Park System. The area has deep human history. The Minisink region was home to the Munsee people before Dutch and French Huguenot colonists arrived in the late seventeenth century. The modern recreation area was established in 1965 in connection with the controversial Tocks Island Dam project; after the dam was canceled in 1978, the acquired lands were preserved as a national recreation area. There are ongoing efforts to redesignate it as a full national park, which would be the first such park in either New Jersey or Pennsylvania.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
