Jenolan Karst Conservation Reserve

The Jenolan Karst Conservation Reserve is a protected natural area in the Central Tablelands of New South Wales, Australia, located west of the Blue Mountains and within the Oberon Council area. It is best known as the setting for the Jenolan Caves, a vast and deeply developed limestone cave system that is regarded as the oldest known and dated open cave system in the world, with ages traced back around 340 million years. The reserve covers roughly 3,083 hectares of rugged karst landscape and provides habitat for rare and endemic flora and fauna, both within the caves and in the surrounding forest and valley systems. Its underground passages follow the subterranean course of the Jenolan River and include more than 40 kilometres of multi-level passages and over 300 known entrances, only a fraction of which are open to the public. As part of the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area, the reserve holds international significance for its geology, cave formations, and Indigenous heritage. It is a landmark of Australian natural history, combining internationally recognised scientific value with a long history as one of the country's most visited natural tourism attractions.
