Kgaswane Mountain Reserve

Kgaswane Mountain Reserve is a South African nature reserve of roughly 53 square kilometres, set on the northern slopes of the Magaliesberg within the Magaliesberg Biosphere Reserve. It lies just a few kilometres south-west of Rustenburg in North West Province and is managed by the North West Parks and Tourism Board. The reserve protects a mosaic of mountain veld, grassland, mixed woodland, scrub, and pockets of fynbos on terrain shaped by the ancient Magaliesberg range. It supports a broad mix of antelope, smaller mammals, and predators, alongside one of the most diverse bird lists in the region. A breeding colony of Cape vultures and several eagle species highlight the reserve's importance for raptors. In 2019, Kgaswane was formally recognised as a Ramsar wetland site, reinforcing its standing as a protected area of national and international conservation interest. With day visitor facilities, camping areas, and several hiking trails of varying length, the reserve combines ecological significance with accessible outdoor recreation.
