Khosrov Forest State Reserve

Khosrov Forest State Reserve is a strict nature reserve in the Ararat Province of Armenia, occupying roughly 23,000 hectares of rugged mountain terrain between the Geghama range and the foothills edging the Ararat plain. Its elevations span from semi-desert lowlands around 700 meters to alpine slopes near 2,800 meters, creating a layered landscape of phrygana shrublands, juniper and oak woodlands, mountain steppes, and subalpine meadows. The reserve is exceptional for its ancient Tertiary relict juniper and oak forests, surviving fragments of dry Mediterranean-type vegetation, and a remarkable concentration of endemic and Red Book species within just one percent of Armenia's territory. The Azat and Vedi river basins carve deep canyons through the reserve, sustaining freshwater springs, wetlands, and rare forest types that are unique not only in Armenia but across the Caucasus ecoregion. Founded by King Khosrov III in the 4th century as one of the earliest documented royal conservation reserves, the area was formally protected in 1958 and has since been recognized with the European Diploma of Protected Areas. It serves as a key refuge for the Persian leopard, brown bear, bezoar ibex, and a wealth of raptors, while also holding more than 300 medieval and early Christian monuments scattered through its canyons and plateaus.
