Lake Woods

Lake Woods is an ephemeral freshwater lake in the Northern Territory of Australia, lying on Newcastle Creek near the small town of Elliott on the Stuart Highway, roughly midway between Darwin and Alice Springs. The lake's basin floods irregularly and, during major events, merges with the near-permanent South Newcastle and Longreach waterholes on Newcastle Creek to create a very large expanse of open water within the surrounding semi-arid landscape. The lake basin supports open lignum shrubland, open woodland of coolibah, gutta-percha, and belarie, and stands of river red gum around the waterholes. Within this habitat, Lake Woods has been recognized as an Important Bird Area (IBA) by BirdLife International because it regularly supports very large numbers of waterbirds when flooded. It is known especially as a breeding site for waterbirds, including the only known inland breeding site in the Northern Territory for great egrets.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
