A small Rhine oxbow reserve protecting rare aquatic vegetation and waterbird habitat in the Lower Rhine.

Lange Renne

Lange Renne is a small nature reserve (Naturschutzgebiet) in the district of Kleve, North Rhine-Westphalia, in western Germany. It lies southeast of the village of Mehr, part of the town of Rees, and protects the southern portion of a former channel of the Rhine known as the Lange Renne or Lange Rinne. The feature that gives the reserve its name is a roughly 1.5-kilometre-long, approximately 150-metre-wide oxbow lake that was cut off from the main Rhine during a historical flood event. While the northern stretch of the old waterway is still used for local recreation, the southern section has been formally protected since 2010 because it hosts well-developed floating-leaf vegetation and extensive reed beds. Ecologically, the reserve is significant for its amphibian habitat, dragonfly populations, waterbirds, and red-listed plant communities. Its compact footprint, combined with clear conservation targets, makes it a representative example of the small, ecologically focused reserves that characterize the Lower Rhine floodplain landscape.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
