Chamangá Rock Art Protected Landscape

Chamangá Rock Art Protected Landscape is a protected cultural-natural area in the department of Flores, in central Uruguay, lying east of the city of Trinidad. Officially incorporated into Uruguay's National System of Protected Areas in 2010, the site covers more than 12,000 hectares of gently undulating prairie crossed by the Chamangá and Los Molles streams, with gallery woodland along the watercourses and scattered wetlands. The protected landscape is recognized for holding the densest cluster of rock paintings in Uruguay, accounting for more than two-thirds of all pictographs inventoried in the country. What makes Chamangá unusual even by global standards is that the paintings are not sheltered in caves or rock overhangs; they sit fully exposed in open countryside on granite outcrops, making the site both archaeologically distinctive and visually striking. Efforts have been under way for the site to be included on UNESCO's World Heritage tentative list, reflecting its outstanding archaeological importance. The pictographs, dominated by abstract geometric motifs, turn an ordinary working landscape of cattle pasture and cropland into a landscape of major prehistoric significance.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
