Croatia's largest wetland sanctuary and the most expansive floodplain in the Danube basin

Lonjsko Polje Nature Park

Lonjsko Polje Nature Park is the largest protected wetland in Croatia and the entire Danube basin, encompassing a vast alluvial floodplain along the Sava River in central-eastern Croatia. The nature park covers approximately 50,650 hectares, stretching from the areas east of Sisak to the west of Nova Gradiška, following the course of the Sava and its tributary the Lonja River. This expansive floodplain is characterized by seasonal flooding dynamics that create a mosaic of wet meadows, marshes, forests, and pastoral landscapes, making it one of the most ecologically significant wetland ecosystems in southeastern Europe. The area was designated a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance in 1993 and established as a nature park in 1998, with its administrative center located in the village of Krapje.
