Magertriften von Ober-Mörlen und Ostheim

Magertriften von Ober-Mörlen und Ostheim is a small nature reserve (Naturschutzgebiet) in the Wetteraukreis district of Hesse, Germany, established in 1990 to protect a distinctive fragment of nutrient-poor grassland (Magertriften) that has become rare in the region. The reserve lies between the town of Ober-Mörlen and the village of Ostheim, a district of Butzbach, occupying roughly 77 hectares of gently rolling landscape at the edge of the Wetterau lowlands. The area is characterized by dry, species-rich grassland communities that depend on low-fertility soils and traditional land use rather than active fertilization. These habitats host a specialised flora and insect fauna typical of calcareous and semi-dry grassland in central Germany, and the reserve is also part of the EU Natura 2000 network as a Flora-Fauna-Habitat site. Despite its modest size, the reserve is a regionally important refuge for grassland biodiversity in an otherwise heavily agricultural and traffic-influenced landscape. The Usa river runs along its southern edge, while the Fauerbach stream borders parts of the southwestern and southern perimeter, and the autobahn A5 and federal road B275 pass nearby, underlining the contrast between the protected habitat and the surrounding developed land.
