Mamungari Conservation Park

Mamungari Conservation Park is a large protected area in the far west of South Australia, spanning the southern reaches of the Great Victoria Desert and the northern edge of the Nullarbor Plain. Stretching more than 21,000 square kilometres, the park forms one of the most extensive wilderness areas in arid Australia and is classified as an IUCN Category Ia strict nature reserve, the highest level of protection afforded to natural areas. The conservation park carries a distinctive dual identity as both an Australian protected area and one of the country's UNESCO Biosphere Reserves, a status it has held since 1977. Its remote location, far from major population centres and abutting the Western Australian border, has helped preserve a largely untouched desert landscape of sandplains, dune fields, salt lakes, and sparse desert vegetation. Mamungari is also notable for being jointly managed by the South Australian Department for Environment and Water and the Maralinga Tjarutja and Pila Nguru traditional owners. Following a major land return in 2004, the park is part of one of the largest native title handbacks in South Australian history, and stands as a significant place where Aboriginal cultural connection and contemporary conservation practice intersect.

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.
