A naturally eroded sandstone cavern in Flores, Uruguay, recognized as the country's second UNESCO Global Geopark.

Grutas del Palacio

Grutas del Palacio is a natural monument in the department of Flores in central Uruguay, protecting a dramatic sandstone cavern formed by natural erosion over geological timescales. The protected area sits in the locality of Marincho, roughly 46 kilometers north of the departmental capital Trinidad and well over 200 kilometers from Montevideo, making it a relatively remote inland geological site within the country's protected-area network. The reserve is significant for both its geological character and its institutional profile. Its sedimentary formations date to the Late Cretaceous, while the iron-rich cementation that hardened loose sands into stone occurred during the early Tertiary, producing a shell of ferrified sandstone supported by a forest of columnar structures. Beyond its scientific value, the site was incorporated into Uruguay's National System of Protected Areas in 2013 and is the centerpiece of the country's first geopark, recognized as the second geopark in South America.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
