Grenada's largest cloud forest reserve, crowning the island's highest peak and supplying its headwaters.

Mount St. Catherine Forest Reserve

Mount St. Catherine Forest Reserve is Grenada's second largest declared terrestrial protected area, set on the central massif of the island and covering roughly 934 hectares of forested slopes, ridges, and summits. Its defining feature is Mount Saint Catherine itself, the highest point in Grenada at 840 meters, an extensively weathered volcanic peak considered dormant but still classified as the island's only live volcano because of its preserved morphology and the hot springs and fumaroles on its flanks. The reserve protects one of the most ecologically distinctive landscapes in the Lesser Antilles: a sequence of vegetation zones that runs from lowland rainforest on the lower slopes through transitional and tall cloud forest up to elfin and Sierra palm cloud forest near the summit. These highland forests capture rainfall and cloud-mist condensate, feeding seven of the largest watersheds on the island and supplying the catchment basins that distribute water across Grenada's populated and agricultural lowlands. Beyond its ecological role, the reserve is also a focal point for outdoor recreation and cultural landscape. It contains the country's tallest waterfall, Tufton Hall Waterfalls, the hottest known geothermal spring at Hapsack Springs, and the most accessible bathing pool at Clabony Sulphur Springs. Trails radiate from the massif's base into agroforestry country around Victoriaville and Mt. Horne, where nutmeg and cacao plantations meet the forest reserve boundary, blending the protected natural area with the island's living agricultural heritage.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
